AIM In Action - Accessible Spaces are Better Spaces

The Nora Project is excited to  share additional information about AIM - an Ability Inclusive Mindset. We firmly believe that by changing mindsets we can move schools and communities toward a more inclusive environment.

In our last AIM in Action post,  we shared information about inclusive environments being better environments for everyone, not just for individuals with disabilities. The video we shared, Inclusion Makes the World More Vibrant, demonstrated a method of inclusion “on the fly” so to speak. Meaning, nothing at the museum was set up to foster participation by the mom who was blind, so her young son stepped up and created that inclusive moment for her. By extension, others at the museum were drawn into and benefitted from the boy’s energetic description of the painting.

Now - picture that same type of situation, but with planning and forethought to allow everyone, no matter their ability, to engage in and enjoy the experience. That’s where the AIM behavior of intentional and creative planning comes in. Universal Design (UDL), the intentional creation of spaces and activities designed for all, is fundamental to the successful creation of inclusive communities. Listen to this TEDxBoulder talk by Michael Nesmith entitled Why We Need Universal Design.

As you listen, consider these guiding questions:

  1. Does it surprise you that Michael’s job is to create accessible media for people of different needs and backgrounds? Why? Is it because he is deaf? What does your reaction tell you about how you perceive disability?

  2. Were you surprised to learn that a major online storefront would employ someone to make their medium as accessible as possible? Do you even notice how accessible it is?

  3. Think about Michael’s example of the doorknob, and the progression to a more universal design. Can you think of another everyday item that could be improved in a similar fashion?

Michael says that disability drives innovation, it forces you to come up with new solutions, it does not impair you. Using the concepts of Universal Design and an Ability Inclusive Mindset can unify us, can allow us to support each other, can promote a true community where all have access and all can contribute. It is often said that it is society that creates disability and impedes access. If the underpinnings of a society are grounded in UDL and AIM - the sky's the limit.

Have you developed an access solution that you would be willing to share? We would love to hear about it! Post to social media and tag The Nora Project, or email to janie@thenoraproject.ngo. Remember, working together we can create an inclusive society where all will benefit.
