Podcasts that Center Disabled Voices

Podcasts present a unique opportunity to sit in on intimate conversations and really understand another person’s perspective. The Nora Project staffers have a few favorite podcasts that center the disabled experience and offer a glimpse into the diversity and complexity of the disability community. Check these out, and be sure to let us know what your favorite podcasts are in the comments!

Disability Visibility Project

A blog, podcast, and archive of stories all in one, Alice Wong’s Disability Visibility Project is not to be missed. Subscribe for weekly content that shares stories about the disabled experience, focusing on disability rights, social justice, and intersectionality. Episode 82 of the podcast is a great way to learn more about Alice Wong, the brilliant and creative mind behind all of this content.

The Accessible Stall

Kyle Khachadurian and Emily Ladau take on the topics being discussed in the disability world by breaking them down and really getting to the heart of the issues. They take on challenging topics and dig deep into their personal experiences and beliefs to bring two very different perspectives to the public. One recent episode is a reflection on when they first understood themselves to be disabled, and how that shaped their life experiences.

Talking with Tech

This informative podcast is hosted by Speech/Language Pathologists Rachel Madel and Chris Bugaj. They have guests on the podcast ranging from other SLPs, AAC users, AAC companies, and parents. If you are looking to learn more about Assistive Technology or Augmentative and alternative communication from the perspective of makers, users, and practitioners, this podcast is for you. We recommend checking out episode 137, where guests Kevin William and Lateef McCleoud, both AAC users, share their perspective about racism and ableism.

Disarming Disability

The podcast's mission is to powerfully deconstruct disability through candid conversations with experts exploring topics related to disability. The podcast looks to educate, empower, voice, and build a more inclusive society. It is hosted by Nicole Kelly and Sarah Tuberty (the name of their podcast is a pun - they are both missing a part of their arms). Check out Season 1, episode 4, an interview with Candace Coleman, the Racial Justice Organizer at Access Living, as they discuss the intersection of race and disability.
