Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Kate Ashe

The Nora Project team relies heavily on volunteers to make the magic of our programs possible throughout the year. From recording read aloud videos to helping plan events and review curriculum, volunteers make all the difference in the world. Join us in celebrating Mary Kate Ashe and her work supporting TNP in today’s volunteer spotlight.

How did you hear about The Nora Project?

I first heard about and decided to volunteer with The Nora Project after a colleague mentioned the organization during a conversation about inclusive practices. They shared a copy of the Inclusion Handbook and I knew immediately that I wanted to work with TNP.

Describe the work you’ve completed so far.

While volunteering for TNP I have helped develop the Primer Pack for Preschool program curriculum, which is a younger extension of already existing lesson plans. I specialize in inclusive early childhood spaces and was very intrigued at this challenge.

What about your work with The Nora Project are you most proud of?

I am very proud of my work with this team on developing the Primer Pack for Preschool curriculum! We had such great conversations about the incredible capability that children of this age have for compassion and understanding. These conversations lead to a great product that I think our younger students and their teachers will really benefit from.

Describe how The Nora Project has impacted you.

I have so enjoyed my experience working with TNP. Many of the conversations we had while creating the Primer Pack for Preschool have inspired my current Action Research project for my masters program (Early Childhood: Inclusive Education Curriculum & Instruction). I will be researching how we teach and communicate about disability with children and why many find this an uncomfortable topic - something TNP practices daily!

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience with The Nora Project?

I am so thankful that I found an organization that so directly matches my values and passions about building inclusive spaces and educating about disability! I have really valued my experiences working with the group and felt my time and thoughts valued in return! I can't wait to help tackle another project.
