TNP at Your Dinner Table: 4th Edition
As the end of the school year approaches, many families will have more time to spend together. Why not spend some of this additional time embedding social emotional learning (SEL) skills in a fun and easy way? Over the past 3 months, The Nora Project has created a deck of 40 Table Topic cards that address four key SEL topics that are the pillars of our Primer Pack curriculum.
In case you missed it, our first set of cards provided questions to help children build a foundation for understanding simple and complex emotions in themselves and to begin to develop emotional literacy. Our second set of cards was developed to help children to apply this knowledge of emotions to those around them and build their empathy muscles. The third deck focuses on friendship and being an includer. Check out last month’s blog post here!
Our final installment of the Table Topics deck centers around disability and diversity. The Nora Project defines disability as a difference in the human condition impacting the way a person moves, communicates, completes the daily tasks of life (such as eating or breathing), processes information, manages feelings, or learns. The Nora Project understands that other differences, such as differences in how people look or engage socially, can also be categorized as disabilities. People with disabilities may use supports, tools, and strategies to complete everyday tasks. They are people who live rich, complex, meaningful lives and make positive contributions to their communities. As you engage in these conversation topics at home, it’s important to emphasize as much as possible how typical, expected, and natural disability is. There’s nothing tragic, scary, or unusual about it.
The conversation and education about disability starts at home. We hope you’ll enjoy the final installment of The Nora Project’s Table Topics and the rich conversation that it has brought into your home.
